Our Stories

Steve Thomas “the tactician” has seen business go from strength to strength since the doors first opened as Optimum Marine & Shipbrokers at Nelson Marina. Steve’s Dad, Don Thomas, launched the business in 1993. With Don’s passing in 2013, Steve has now taken the reins. He likes to offer plenty of free information to help people make the best decisions when buying or selling boats. Steve trained in marine engineering after leaving school, before moving on to a career in theatre lighting. He still enjoys this as a hobby, along with cruising local waters in his classic launch “Seabird”.

Rob Webber has a very good knowledge of the commercial and recreational industry in NZ. He has been with NZ Boat Sales since 2010, and has been involved in the commercial fishing and mussel industry since the early 1980s. Rob also has experience in the commercial gear supply industry. Rob was bought up on the family farm at French Pass and  owned a number of boats both commercial and recreational, prior to joining NZ Boat Sales. Understanding the process of buying or selling is complex and he is very keen to assist clients with finding the right vessel.

Picton Marina

Gordon Low is a passionate boatie who holds a Marine Department qualification and has clocked up 30 years brokerage experience. Gordon is supported by Pam (his wife) at their Picton office. With modern technology being utilised, Gordon’s focus is on the core nature of the business, sourcing the right vessels for clients’ requirements and guiding them through the process of buying or selling a vessel. After sales service is also of paramount importance. Gordon is often seen walking marina piers and talking to boaties. His infectious congeniality and sincerity are quite unique. An experienced team work alongside Gordon.

David Gillies originally hails from Oamaru.  He and his extended family have ‘saltwater in their blood’.  David’s move to Picton expanded his passion for yachts to a whole new level and he embraced competitive yacht racing.  Both David and Eleanor (his wife) have dedicated much of their leisure time to serving Waikawa Boating Club and are well respected in the yachting community.  David currently owns a Farr 1020 and has an enviable racing reputation.  You would be hard pressed to find someone in Picton with more yachting experience than David.  His easy-going, yet highly professional manner will impress.

Andrew McGeorge has boats in his blood. His father was all about boating – power and sail. Andrew grew up in Christchurch, boating in Lyttelton and Akaroa from an early age, getting his first P-Class at age seven and sea scouting as a teenager. His engineering grandparents and father led him to an interest in electronics and robotics which took him to Japan for ten years where he met his American wife Kate, had children and sailed up and down the Inland Sea of Japan! In 1999 they returned to New Zealand to a small farm on Banks Peninsula where he quickly got involved in sailing and became the local Sea Scout Master. When the children reached high school age, the family moved to Christchurch. In 2016 he purchased GANNET, a Pacific Seacraft 37. Andrew says “I have enjoyed every day aboard GANNET, and the new marina in Lyttelton is the cream on the cake!”

Janis Marler has three generations of sailing experience behind her, plus many years sailing on her family’s traditional yacht. Janis and her partner Blair Harkness have owned a series of dinghies and keel boats, and she brings to the NZ Boat Sales team ten years of yacht broking experience and a long career in marketing and selling.

Blair Harkness has been involved with boating ever since he could handle a pair of oars as a five year old. He has sailed and raced sailing dinghies and keelers, and has worked as a TV and magazine yachting and power-boating journalist in NZ and the UK. A yacht broker for more than ten years, Blair has also been involved in marketing, public relations, and photography.

Havelock Marina

Ron Thompson has been involved in recreational boating for several years. He currently owns a 47ft Carver Trojan. His background is in marketing & sales, with many years involved in importing an array of products, mainly from Asia. When Ron first started boating he had very little knowledge but was wise enough to listen to the more experienced of us. He sees his clients to be like him, they want a boat to fit their requirements and lifestyle and for a broker to really listen to their needs. Ron feels it is very desirable to obtain a detailed brief from his clients of their priorities.

Dean Hoare is a passionate Wellingtonian having a lifetime of boating experience in and around the Wellington region including his favourite place of all – the Marlborough Sounds. Over the years he has owned many boats, both power and sail. He currently enjoys cruising in his 14 metre launch “Infinito”. Dean is a member of the RPNYC and crews on a wild and wet racing trimaran.

If you are just thinking about buying a boat, or maybe selling your existing vessel, Dean will help make the whole process an easy and enjoyable one. Maybe you just want to talk to someone about anything to do with boats? Give Dean a call and he will point you in the right direction.

George Janis, or ‘Gentleman George’ as he is affectionately known, is a well known identity and has been around boats since a child, and loves nothing more than to share his passion, and pass on his nautical knowledge and expertise. Cook Strait is George’s SH1 to the Marlborough Sounds, and for many years and he has been ‘crossing the ditch’. People find George a pleasure to do business with.
